NoTowers Support to Neighborhood-Friendly Candidates

Dear Friends:

In only a few weeks, on October 9th, we will be voting in the Raleigh municipal
election for a new City Council.~ The single most important issue facing our
community is the rapid pace of growth and the impact to our quality of life.
The recent controversy surrounding the Coker Towers rezoning request
demonstrates the challenges Raleigh faces for planned, managed growth
strategies and a process that includes meaningful neighborhood participation.
Over the past 10 months, we have learned all too well the difficult work
involved in bringing the issues of managed growth, traffic and the importance
of citizen participation to the attention of the Council.

So far the Coker Towers fight has cost well over $10,000 and neighbors have
invested over ten thousand hours in this struggle and COKER TOWERS IS NOT OVER.
We have been told that plans are being made right now to bring the proposal
back to the City Council. It is clear that without a NEW City Council we will
continue to face these kinds of battles. We must elect a City Council that
respects neighborhoods and would not consider dropping a shopping complex the
size of Crabtree Valley Mall into the middle of a healthy community. We need to
elect a City Council that understands that REAL smart growth reduces the number
of cars on the road, instead of adding 14,000 to 18,000 cars to an already
burdened roadway!~~ We must have City Councilors that value preserving existing
neighborhoods and are determined to enhance the quality of life in these
neighborhoods.

I am supporting candidates that have a vision for Raleigh and believe in
citizen participation in government:

Charles Meeker (Mayor),
Janet Cowell (At Large),
Andrew Leager (At Large),
Warren Raybould (District E)
Benson Kirkman (District D),
James West (District C),
Bruce Spader (District B),
Tom Slater (District A).

Warren Raybould (District E) has been one the key people in NCRDR (Neighborhood
Coalition for Responsible Development in Raleigh) that worked day and night to
give citizens an opportunity to have input into how Raleigh can grow better.
That is why I am writing to ask you to support Warren Raybould for City Council
in District E.

Warren has a vision for Raleigh. He will work for mass transit and be an
advocate for the TTA Regional Rail project. He supports community involvement
in planning - which is the primary reason he became involved in the Coker
Towers rezoning case. Warren knows we can be smarter about development, and
believes that in order for it to be successful it needs to be the result of
community based planning and supported by real transportation options. In a
nutshell, Warren believes we ought to plan for future growth - not just react
to it.

It is important that we all support Warren, regardless of where we live in
Raleigh. As we know from our experience with the Coker Towers case, one vote
can determine whether a bad project moves forward or is stopped.~ Warren's
challenger is being well financed by the development community. They want to
keep the City Council in the hands of those they can easily control. Without
Warren's vote on the City Council, we'll see more of the same thing in
neighborhoods all over Raleigh.

PLEASE HELP WARREN THROUGH YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TODAY. He has a great plan
laid out to win this election, but he needs your help to execute on that plan.
Any contribution you make will move us forward toward the goal of protecting
Raleigh's neighborhoods, while planning for the growth in the future.
