Stoplight at Glenwood and Cole

Excerpted from a letter from Jan Johnston:

As we discussed at our last meeting, I'd like to explain the
concerns David and I have regarding Cole Street, and the possibility that
there will not be a stoplight installed at the top of the exit from Wade
onto Glenwood, and the effects that would have on Cole Street.

Currently, because of the difficulties in turning left onto Glenwood from
the Wade Avenue exit, there are many instances where commuters continue on
Wade past the Glenwood exit, turning right onto Cole and taking Cole up to
Glenwood to turn right instead of turning left from the exit. This creates
significant traffic on Cole, especially during the evening rush hour.
Because of the narrowness of Cole Street, and the lack of driveways causing
on-street parking, this creates a real danger because with cars parked on
both sides of the street, the street is narrowed to one lane. With traffic
coming through from the bottom of Cole off of Wade - which frequently is at
significantly higher than the posted speed of 25 MPH - and traffic turning
onto Cole from Glenwood, more often than not one of the cars has to stop
and pull over to the side to let the other car proceed. Having encountered
this situation on almost a daily basis I can tell you that the risk of an
accident is quite significant. In addition, because our house is situated
virtually at the entrance off of Wade onto Cole, we personally observe on
almost a daily basis cars and trucks literally whizzing past the house
making this loop.

Without the installation of a stoplight to allow commuters to more easily
make the left turn onto Glenwood, this situation will only get worse. I
understand the concern of having a stoplight at every block and how this
might impede traffic flow on Glenwood. However, the peripheral effects to
neighborhood streets also needs examination.
